Rare Spanish version of Capendu’s "Voyage Extraordinaire de Mr. Tramontane" (French) and " A Trip To The Moon" (English)

This Spanish-language edition of the classic movable book story featuring Mr. Tramontane and Mr. Giggins’ fantastic journey to the moon in a luxurious automobile includes 4 chromolithograph tab-operated movable plates and 6 sepia-toned text pages. Notably, this edition lacks publisher information, was issued without a title page, and has one less movable plate than its English and French counterparts.

  • Publication Date: ca. 1914 (no exact date, English edition published in 1910) No author or publisher listed.
  • Size: 4to (11 x 8 1/4 inches; 280 x 210mm)
  • Condition: This very good and complete Spanish-language edition is in remarkable condition for its age. All movable elements are present and fully functional, with no loss or repairs, maintaining their original integrity. The interactive components remain in excellent working order. While there are a couple of edge tears on one of the movable pages, these do not affect the operation of the movable parts.

The binding is still intact, though there is some minor edge wear typical of a book of this age. Inside the front page, there is a neat dedication from "Grandma Bruner". Please refer to the attached photos for a more detailed view of the condition.

This unrecorded Spanish-language movable book is an exceedingly scarce and unique example of early 20th-century interactive children's literature. Unlike the more widely known movable books published in France or Germany during the same period, Spanish-language movable books were produced in very limited quantities. This particular edition, lacking documentation in major bibliographies or records, suggests that it was either a localized print run or part of a short-lived publishing effort, making it incredibly rare. The lack of a publisher's imprint further suggests that this edition may have been produced for a niche audience or as an adaptation of a European title that did not see widespread circulation in Spain. Spanish movable books, especially from the late 19th and early 20th centuries were less commonly produced compared to countries like Germany and France, surviving copies are quite scarce. They were often translations or adaptations of popular European titles from countries like France and Germany. These adaptations were usually not as mechanically complex as German or French counterparts - this book serves as an example as it was published with one less movable plate than the French version.

Any Edition of this early movable is scarce, let alone in Spanish. When K&K sold the french version of this book in 2011 "Voyage extraordinaire", they stated "Not in the relevant children book bibliographies, not in Quérard and Monod. - No copy in KVK. No copy on the German and English auction market over the past 50 years. - Rare."

Notes: While this Spanish book does not indicate a publisher, The French Version of this book was published by Meggendorfer’s French publisher, Capendu. [CAPENDU, A. of Paris.] Voyage Extraordinaire de Mr. Tramontane. A. Bourgade. We have also seen an English (United States) Version by the L.W. Walter Chicago Company titled " A Trip To The Moon" (By: J R Pepper; L.W. Walter Co.). and an English (British) edition was published by Browne & Browne in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
