The Wild Beast Show
RARE 1890 SHAPE BOOK PANORAMA WITH POP-UPS
Publisher: London ; New York : Fred. Warne & Co. 1890
Illustrated by Jessie Currie and L. Pritchard. Printed in Bavaria
11 x 15 cm (8.5 X 8.7”)
Quite interesting as it is a “shape book” a fold out and a movable pop-up type book in that the cages pull out to show off the die-cut animals inside. Besides the pull out cages, there is also a transparent pull out aquarium page that is still completely intact. Lithographed movable pictures of monkeys, jaguar, hippopotamus, Dromedary, Giraffe, polar bears, rhinoceros, and an aquarium.
Advertised in 1890 as “A Panorama of Wild Beasts, cut out and placed in movable cages”. The Wild Beast Show was published by FREDERICK WARNE for the 1890 Holiday season. It is a smaller book than his similar title “A Day At The Zoo”.
Very Good condition, complete and working. Aquarium “glass cage” is perfectly intact.
Conservator report: The panorama cloth binding has been replaced in two places. One bar replaced on one of the cages – all other movable elements complete and original. Each heavy “pasteboard” page in great shape. Cover has slight paper loss on right side and paper repair on top left. See photos.
