About Treasure Book:
Tony Sarg collaborated with B.F. Jay to create Tony Sarg's Treasure Book, which was part of a larger plan they developed to release interactive children's books. B.F. Jay, known as "Uncle Ben Jay" in the toy industry, worked closely with Sarg to develop the concept and design for the book. Together, they aimed to build on the success of their previous collaboration, Tony Sarg's Surprise Book, which had been a major bestseller in 1941. Treasure Book was published March 1, 1942. introduced the book with an ad in the March 15th Sunday New York Times; it sold 600 copies that week.Large stores all over the country gave the Treasure Book large-scale advertising and big displays. Before his passing, Tony Sarg had sketched out plans for an entire series of novelty books to be published by B.F. Jay. After Tony Sarg's death in 1942, his daughter Mary Sarg Murphy, who began using the name Toni Sarg, expressed her intention to continue her father's legacy by bringing his planned projects to fruition. There are however, there are no well-known publications or novelty books credited to her that mirror the style and interactive nature of Tony Sarg's Treasure Book.. She appears to have been more focused on maintaining his existing body of work and possibly engaging in her own artistic endeavors within the scope of their family business.
Tony Sarg's Treasure Book, released in early 1942, became an immediate hit, quickly selling out across bookstores and toy departments. In 1943 - it sold for $2.00. The unexpected demand of Treasure Book led to the rapid depletion of stock, and due to the timing of Sarg’s death in March 1942, further production of Treasure Book could not be undertaken and no subsequent print runs were ever made.
In 1943, Playthings was a trade magazine that focused on the toy industry - printed this about Tong Sarg and his treasure book:
"Tony Sarg was an acknowledged master-creator, and before his untimely death in early 1942, he and B. F. Jay, known in the trade as "Uncle Ben Jay," got together and planned for many years ahead to elaborate and improve their joint ideas, bringing them out periodically for the delight of the child world. In late 1941, Tony Sarg's Surprise Book was introduced to the trade and made a sensational success, emerging as the best seller of all books for the year. At the same time, it was a "hit" number in toy departments, infants' and children's wear, and juvenile departments. Early in 1942, a new success came out—Tony Sarg's Treasure Book—and this also made the "best seller" lists. This book has completely sold out, and a new run cannot be made this year."
Tony Sarg:
Anthony Frederick Sarg (April 21, 1880 – March 7, 1942) was a German-American artist known for his work as a puppeteer and illustrator. Tony Sarg was born in Cobán, Guatemala, on April 21, 1880. His father was a German consular officer. In 1920, Tony Sarg became a naturalized citizen of the United States.Though he passed away in 1942, two years before Tony Sarg’s Treasure Book was published, his legacy lived on through projects like this one. Sarg’s influence on American visual entertainment, particularly in puppetry, animation, and children's book illustration, remains significant.
Tony Sarg’s Legacy in Puppetry and Animation:Sarg’s career began in puppetry, and he is often credited with revitalizing the art form in the United States during the early 20th century. His marionette shows toured extensively, and he became known for his masterful control and detailed puppet designs. His success in puppetry naturally led him into other visual arts, including animation. In 1921, Sarg animated The First Circus, a short film that was part of a series called Tony Sarg’s Almanac. This early foray into animation demonstrated Sarg’s ability to adapt puppetry techniques for the screen. While living in New York, Tony Sarg immersed himself in art and publishing, earning illustration commissions from magazines like The Saturday Evening Post and Vanity Fair. However, he stood out through puppetry, giving his first performance in the Flatiron Building and later bringing shows like Rip Van Winkle and Alice in Wonderland to Broadway and international stages, including the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. He also designed murals and products for New York hotels and department stores, opened toy shops, and his work became an ideal of American puppetry, praised for its artistry and humor. One of Sarg’s most enduring contributions to American culture is his role in transforming the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade into a spectacle of giant, floating characters. In 1928, Sarg was commissioned by Macy’s to design massive helium-filled balloons, including animals such as elephants and tigers, to replace live animals in the parade. These balloons were tethered and maneuvered by handlers along the streets of New York City, a concept that quickly became a staple of the parade. His innovations in balloon design, particularly their size and durability, set the standard for the giant balloon floats that still grace the parade today. Sarg shifted his focus away from competing with other puppet studios and instead delved into illustrating magazine covers, guide books, and original children's books. He also ventured into designing games and toys, blending his creative flair with functional play. His talents extended beyond the world of illustration—Sarg created sophisticated interiors for luxury department stores and restaurants, including the supper club at the Waldorf Astoria in New York.
At the 1939 New York World's Fair, Sarg played a significant role, designing the event's official pictorial map and creating vibrant, modern fabric patterns with World's Fair motifs. These designs were used for women’s scarves, handkerchiefs, dresses, table linens, and upholstery, all sold through Lord & Taylor. His influence continued through his protégé, Bil Baird, who went on to design the famous puppets for the film The Sound of Music.
Tony Sarg's bankruptcy in 1939 likely contributed to the delay of The Treasure Book, which was published posthumously in 1944. Financial difficulties from overextending his business ventures led to the dissolution of his marionette company and the selling of his puppets to settle debts. After declaring bankruptcy, Sarg focused on smaller-scale projects, including his work with Macy's and the creation of children’s books, but his financial challenges would have made the production of more complex projects, like The Treasure Book, difficult to complete during his lifetime.
