Gold foil was an optional upgrade on some Schaller & Kirn books. This one uses beautiful gold foil for the 6 movable backgrounds. -Crafted to resemble a medieval manuscript enriched with illuminations, the characters are depicted against a golden backdrop that highlights the customs and occupations of that era. This includes gentlewomen engaged in spinning wool using a spinning wheel or tending to doves, a troubadour strumming his mandolin, and a youthful page accompanied by his dog, participating in a hunting party at the royal court.

Condition: Very Good. All movables are complete, and working. All parts are original except for the expert restoration of a woman's arm on the third movable. The boards and binding are very nice for age. Some of the gold leaf used to intricately decorate the cover is worn.

Notes on the publisher: See our Movable Book History section for our bio on the publishing firms of Carl Schaller

In 1883 Karl Schaller founded the Lithographic Art Institute and Storybook Factory in Fureth Bavaria along with a partner with Gregor Kirn. Kirn left the business in 1885 making Schaller the sole owner. Movable books imprinted Schaller & Kirn ( or SK) were likely published in 1884 or 1885. After 1885 they were Carl Schaller or C. Schaller.
