Title: The old fashioned Mother Goose melodies, complete
with magic colored pictures
Illustrated by: William Ludwell Sheppard
Designer and Printer: Donaldson Brothers
Publisher: G.W. Carleton & Co.
Date of Publication: 1879
Red
pictorial cloth stamped in black and gold
7 1/2 inch by 6 ½ “ wide
Color and sepia illustrations with a “lift the flap” movable
feature on each of 45 pages.
This is a transformation book. The "magic colored pictures"
are half illustrations, which transform that portion of the picture to the
second part of the verse.
45 movable illustrations are present – A collector was kind enough to let us know that there were originally 48 pages in these books. We must assume therefore, that 3 pages at the end are missing.
Condition: All
movable transformations are complete and working with no tears. All pages have some typical age foxing. Spine is sunned. Cover has a darker area and
some edge wear – (see photo). Pages bound
but shaken (starting to come loose). Covers a bit cocked.
Collector’s Corner:
Carleton published 6 Mother Goose books in a series during the
late 1870’s –
As far as we can tell: The Donaldson Mother Goose Series consisted
of:
Volume 1: The old fashioned Mother Goose' melodies complete with
magic colored pictures 45-46 pages
Volume 2: The old fashioned Mother Goose' melodies complete with
magic colored pictures 32 pages
Volume 3: Mother Goose melodies
with magical changes – 16 pages
Volume 4: Old Mother Hubbard - ?
pages
Volume 5: How 8 men became 1:
magical changes with Mother Goose melodies – 16 pages
Volume 6: Humpty Dumpty: magical
changes with Mother Goose melodies – 16 pages
Of interest: The American Antiquarian Society – through Applewood
publishers, has just published a shortened repro of this book that is yet to be
released ( as of March 20, 2012). Check it out ISBN
13: 9781429080774.
Note on photos: We have only posted a few of the 45 of this Mother Goose Melodies
scenes. As you can see from
the ones posted, many of the transformations turn into pictures that would be
considered too scary for today’s children.
We have babies falling out of trees, a wife being turned over in a wheelbarrow,
owls swooping down on little boys, a woman beating her bloody husband with a
chair, a blackbird biting off somebody’s nose, and check out the spider attacking Miss Muffet, he's bigger than she is!
