Collector's Corner:

The publishing firm of G. W. Carleton was founded in New York in 1861 as the successor firm to Rudd and Carleton (q.v.)
George Washington Carleton had started in the publishing business in 1857 as a partner of Rudd and Carleton. The firm was initially in the sole ownership of George Washington Carleton. In 1867 the firm became G. W. Carleton and Co. From 1871 George Wellington Dillingham became a partner. In 1886 Carleton retired and the publishing house continued as the G. W. Dillingham Company until it went bankrupt in 1916. See 'Dictionary of Literary Biography' 49 (1986), pp. 84-85, and see the FOB entry for the G. W. Dillingham Company.
Old references cite Carleton as a successful publisher and a shrewd businessman, Carleton was himself an author and talented "cartoonist". To learn more see: “Fifty Years Among Authors, Books and Publishers” by J. C. Derby as he gives an account of Carleton’s career.
