Fascinating 1908 Japanese pop-up protesting the 1908 USA/Japan Gentlemen’s Agreement - Ephemera
One of the most interesting pieces of antique movable ephemera that we have seen. This 1908 pop-up letter was mailed (postmarked) on February 19th, the day after the United States and Japan made fully effective The Gentlemen’s Agreement which limited the number of Japanese immigrants into the United States. We imagine that the sender was not happy with this agreement as the pop-up shows the American Flag flying upside down. One of the stamps attaching the string bears the image of an elephant.
This may be a nod to the Republican US president of the time, Theodore
Roosevelt who enacted the Gentlemen’s Agreement by unilateral action. (The agreement was
nullified by the immigration act of 1924)
Approximately 24" by 16"
Consists of an envelope that folds out onto a large pop-up. The pop-up carries the flags of several countries leading up a string to an upside down United States flag perched on a red tissue pop-up mound. A Geisha girls looks on, what she was thinking is anyone’s guess.
Very good condition with no damage or tears to the perfectly working pop-up. Some of the flags have bends but nothing missing or torn. The red tissue pop-up mound is perfect. The envelope flap has a tear at the postmark.
